Buzznet Hangs With Taylor Momsen (And a Very Unlucky Sweatshirt)

While on a recent visit to LA for the Golden Revolver Awards, Buzznet caught up with Taylor Momsen at her favorite hotel in Hollywood. Later that night on the red carpet for the show, she'd meet one of her rock heroes, Dave Grohl, who's band the Foo Fighters finally got their first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 Chart!

As for the hotel, we aren't allowed to tell you the location of course, but what we can tell you is that it's a nice little tucked-away spot that she swears to. Why? Taylor told us she likes her privacy and this place boasts no paparazzi, no celebrity hype, and has a staff that Taylor knows and trusts. T-Moms was sweet, funny, and surprisingly low-key for a rockstar who's achieved significant fame, fast, and who seems unable to escape photogs everywhere else she goes.

While we were setting up, her manager came out and told us a story about how her Pretty Reckless Tour Manager had been wearing the same grey hoodie during their LA trip. In a short 3-day period, the hoodie had been subject to a girl vomiting on it, Taylor accidentally setting it aflame, and having day-old fish soup spilt all over it. Yuck! We suggested doing a mini documentary about his sweatshirt's tour experience entitled 'The Plight of The Hoodie.' We hope to see it for a Summer '11 release. Stay tuned!

Check out the pics below of our visit with Taylor, who's rocking jeans for a change and a simple black tank top. And, stay tuned for the full video interview coming soon!

'Gossip Girl' Taylor Momsen Gets Real About Castmates, Calls Pretty Reckless Band Her 'Family'

(click the pics to enlarge)

Taylor Momsen is best known for her role as Jenny Humphrey on the CW hit show 'Gossip Girl, but the multi-talented beauty has been acting and modeling since she was a toddler (starting with a Shake 'N' Bake commercial at age 3). But now the leggy star, 17, can look back on her career in the entertainment industry and say with complete confidence that her heart is actually in music.

Momsen fronts
Pretty Reckless -- an alt-rock band signed to Interscope who released their debut, 'Light Me Up, in 2010. Contrary to the album's title, Momsen shows a darker side throughout the album, showcasing her raspy, powerful set of pipes and skilled songwriting. In her signature peroxide tresses and dramatic, dark eye makeup, she sat down with AOL Music to dish on the details behind her 'Gossip Girl' hiatus, the concert that changed her life and her advice for aspiring young stars.

You have your band the Pretty Reckless, but obviously people also know you from 'Gossip Girl,' too. What would you say is your first love -- music or acting?
Music, without a doubt.

And if you could only do one or the other for the rest of your life?
Music. I don't even have to think about that one.

Would you say that you prefer your bandmates to your 'Gossip Girl' co-stars?
Well, that's such an unfair question. You have to ask, "Do you hang out with everyone you work with?" As for 'Gossip Girl,' we're a cast, we're put together. I'm cool with everybody, but we're not best, best friends outside of work. And you know, a band is like family.

How did you all come together to form the Pretty Reckless?
It's a long story. I was a singer-songwriter for a long time working with different producers and I got hooked up with Kato, who produced the record. And that's when I met Ben [Phillips] (guitar, backup vocals) and we ended up writing the record together. I met Mark [Damon] (bass) and Jamie [Perkins] (drums) through them and over the two-year process of making the record it sort of naturally formed into a band by the end of it ... and here we are.

What is the creative process amongst the group when you're all coming up with a new song?
The creative process is great! There is no real kind of quote unquote process, though. Every song is done so differently. [It] starts from a different place and there is no direct formula, you know?

When did you first get into music?
Well I've been singing since before I can remember and I started writing songs when I was 5 years old. I grew up playing piano, but then stopped and switched to guitar when I was like 8. So, kind of my whole life.

Who were some of your musical inspirations when you were younger?
Well, the Beatles were my favorite band of all time (and still are). I grew up listening to a lot of classic rock on vinyl. I'm a big rock 'n' roll fan. I have massive vinyl collections of Led Zeppelin, the Who, Pink Floyd, AC/DC. You know, the greats.

So, who is on your dream collaborations list?
Well, there's a bunch of people. I would love to write a song with Noel Gallagher. I would do a song with all of Oasis, but I don't know if that's going to happen. So, I'll take Noel Gallagher. I'd love to do something with Lenny Kravitz or DMX. I don't know, I have a bunch of people I would love to work with.

You and DMX -- that would be a cool combination.
DMX is awesome.

Tell us about your first concert -- seeing Britney Spears ...
Well, I was a big Britney fan. I was also a dancer growing up, so to me the production of the show was amazing. I remember that was what I loved about it -- it was a show. It wasn't about the songs exactly. It was about the whole package, the whole performance. And the stage was insane. The amount of things going on! I was like, "how can you do that on a stage?" I couldn't even understand it.

Then when I saw the White Stripes it was a different feel and it was very much about the music. It was so overwhelmingly loud. And just the energy -- that was a very definitive moment for me when I was like, "Oh, I want to do nothing but play in a rock band".

Is the show aspect and the theatricality something that is important to you for your own music?
I mean, I'm all down for pyro[technics] and lights, but you've got to work your way up to that! It's still very much about the music for me. I wouldn't want the show to overtake what we're actually doing on stage.

As far as your schedule goes these days, are you jumping back and forth between filming and your music career?
I'm very focused on music right now and we're touring for the next year. So, it's a busy, busy year for us. We got on 24 planes in the last month, just to give you an idea of what it's like. It's pretty crazy, but awesome.

So, is your 'Gossip Girl' hiatus permanent, then?
Well they're writing me out right now so that I can tour. They're being very supportive of the band and we kind of have an agreement so that I can tour, because I can't do both. I can't be in New York and then in London playing, you know what I mean? So, I have to thank them for that. You won't see me for a while -- and we don't even know if we're picked up for another season yet.

Do you have any big acting aspirations beyond 'Gossip Girl', or are you just thinking solely about music?
I mean, I want to make music. Music is something that I chose. I was put into acting at 3 years old. I like it fine, but it's still very much a job to me. Music is something I couldn't live without. So I want to play in a band, I want to write songs and make records and tour. Whether I will act again or never act again, I don't f---ing know.

What about modeling? You've already been a spokesmodel for a John Galliano fragrance and the face of Madonna's Material Girl line.
Yeah, I've been modeling the longest, since I was two. I've had a lot of great experiences. I mean, working with Madonna was amazing -- it's Madonna. And it was definitely an honor to be chosen by her to be the first face of her first clothing line. I was like, "What?" I didn't believe it when I got the call. I have a really cool photo of Madonna taking my photo. She took some of the pictures for the campaign, and it's great. It's awesome.

Do you want to work in the fashion industry in any other capacity besides modeling?
I would love to have a fashion line one day. I want to hav shoes in it, a fully encompassing fashion line. I don't know when I would do that, because I want to have the time to really commit to it, not just come up with the line and then give it to someone else. I really want to be involved in the designing and everything. I don't have the time to do that right now, but sometime in the future I would love to do that.

You've been working in the entertainment industry since you were 2 years old and you're 17 now. Do you ever wish you had a normal childhood?
I don't really think about it. You only know what you know and I like where I am now. I'm very happy with where I am right now, so I wouldn't change anything. But at the same time, I don't know what I missed, you know what I mean? It's been a different kind of life so far.

When you look at other child stars -- the ones who have fallen off the wagon so to speak -- do you ever fear that might happen to you?
No! I care about what I do. That never even crossed my mind. I love what I do. I enjoy my job, so that's the focus. I can't imagine getting sidetracked from that. Writing and playing is my favorite thing in the world and I can't imagine anything distracting me from that.

You've been in the entertainment business for so long. You're still so young, but what's the biggest lesson you've learned so far about how to stay sane in this industry?
Don't do it unless there's something in it that you love. There is a lot of work and a lot of rejection, it's a tough industry. You really have to have a thick skin and I've built up thick skin. If you don't have that passion and if you can't say that it's something you cant live without, all the other negative aspects of it can become overwhelming.

Do you pay attention at this point to anything that is written about you in the tabloids?
I don't even have a computer. Really, I don't. So, I don't pay attention at all.

Before Taylor Momsen's rockin' acoustic performance at Hollywood's Hard Rock Cafe, we caught up with the Pretty Reckless frontwoman at the Beverly Hilton Hotel for a little photo shoot. The often pantsless songbird surprised us by wearing baggy jeans, a simple top and Doc Marten boots for our poolside photo session. It's easy to forget the singer's Gossip Girl roots when she does the 90s grunge look oh so well. Check out our Beverly Hills pool side pictorial with Taylor.

Taylor and The Pretty Reckless in The New York Times!

    Rowdy Muscularity and Sweet Harmonies

Usually it falls to the writers to get a character purged from a network television series, but Taylor Momsen, who plays the naïve manipulator Jenny Humphrey on “Gossip Girl,” appears to be taking matters into her own hands. For the last two years her other alter ego has been as the frontwoman of the Pretty Reckless, a battering ram of a hard-rock band that she has no difficulty steering. “Light Me Up” (Interscope) is the group’s first full-length album, and it’s terrific fun: salacious, convincingly muscular, unnervingly rowdy. Ms. Momsen, 17, comes by her snarl by way of Courtney Love and Lita Ford, drizzles her lyrics with winks at Tina Turner and Kelly Clarkson and never sounds happy on this album for more than a couple of seconds at a time. “Do you have a light?” she purrs on the title track. “Can you make me feel all right/There’s plenty of white to go around.” Were she a Disney star, she’d be fired by now, but “Gossip Girl” writers might be listening closely, harvesting ideas.

    Exclusive Interview with Seventeen!

Taylor Momsen isn't too worried about what's happening on the Upper East Side these days. She's too busy promoting her new album, "Light Me Up," with her band, The Pretty Reckless. Taylor dished to Seventeen about life on the road, her beauty tricks and secret hobby...

17: Do you have a favorite song on the album?
TM: I can’t pick one favorite. They are all my children. It’s like picking your favorite kid.

17: Tell us about the "Just Tonight" video — what was your inspiration?
TM: I didn’t want the video to define what the listener thought the song was about. I wanted people to be able to relate to it. We wanted it to be more imagery based, so we based it on all the different fairytales — Alice In Wonderland, Sleeping Beauty, Rapunzel. Princess fairytales with a darker, gothic turn.

17: What's been the best part of your tour?
TM: We just finished our first U.S. headlining tour, which was awesome because it was the first one. L.A. was insane and New York was amazing. All the shows were a lot of fun and it’s a club tour so it’s a lot different then when we go oversees. When we go to the U.K. it’s 3,000 people screaming your words back at your and that’s the most amazing feeling on the entire planet. So that definitely takes the cake. We also were touring and went over to France. On the last day we got invited to a underground Guns ‘n’ Roses performance and we got to hang out with Axl Rose for a while. That was pretty cool.

17: Have you had any crazy fan experiences?
TM: In Paris, this one fan gave me a giant book she coordinated with other fans of the band and each person designed a page with a letter, picture, image, or drawing. We got not only one book but also two books filled with all this stuff of fan admiration and support.

17: Where do you keep all of this stuff?
TM: It stays on the bus until I get home and now it’s all in suitcases. I’m very unorganized.

17: Is there anyone that you’d love to collaborate with?
TM: I’d love to collaborate and write a song with Will Gallagher from Oasis. I think he’s a great songwriter. I’d love to tour with Alice in Chains, Aersosmith, ACDC, or Sound Garden. Foo fighters would be awesome too.

17: What's the best career advice you've ever gotten?
TM: I’m not really one for advice. Generally, I like making my own mistakes and learning from them because that’s what I think life is about. I like to figure it out on my own.

17: What about when you were the face of Material Girl? Did Madonna ever tell you anything you've taken to heart?
TM: No, it didn’t get that serious. It was a great fashion experience. Madonna took some of the pictures herself so that was really cool. It was such an honor to be chosen by her to be the first face of her line. I was really surprised. But she was very down-to-earth and very cool. She was very real and you never know what someone who is such an icon is going to be like.

17: Do you have any plans to do a fashion line?
TM: Yeah, eventually I’d love to have a clothing line. At the moment I’m not even thinking about it because if I did do one I’d want to have the time to commit to it fully and make it the best it can be. I wouldn’t just want to put my name on it and sign the project on to someone else. Maybe somewhere down the road.

17: What would this Taylor Momsen collection consist of?
TM: I personally like darker colors or muted colors— whites, blacks, grays or muted colors. There probably wouldn’t be a lot of bright colors. There would probably be a leather jacket. I’d definitely want to create some thigh-boots and shoes for the line. I love shoes.

17: How do you spend your free time?
TM: I don’t really have a lot of down time. The most down time I have is when I’m on the bus traveling to the next city. I liked to play guitar, watch Southpark DVDs, and sew rag dolls. I have a doll collection. I sew weird looking dolls as a hobby. I’m working one right now to give as a gift. They are like the “reckless dolls.”

17: You must have a really awesome eye makeup remover, what's your go-to product?
TM: I don’t use makeup remover, but I love Caudalie face wash. It takes off all my makeup and doesn’t burn my eyes.

17: Will Little J be returning to Gossip Girl anytime soon?
TM: Well, I’m still on the show, but they are being very supportive with letting me tour because you physically can’t do both at the same time. You won’t see me on the show for a while. I want to make records for the rest of my life and tour. Hopefully, I’ll be able to just do that but who knows what the future holds.

17: Are their plans to use your songs in upcoming episodes?
TM: They did play “Make Me Wanna Die,” on an episode, which was totally weird and surreal. It was one of the only episodes I’ve seen because I don’t like to watch anything I’m in. It was like my two worlds colliding, which was strange but cool.

Taylor Momsen’s real life somewhat mirrors the life she lived in her breakout role as Jenny Humphrey on the hit television series, “Gossip Girl”. The character was known for her style evolution while climbing the social ranks of the Upper East Side of New York and eventually the downtown fashion scene as a young designer prodigy. A former girl-next-door, this hot starlet has gone from gossip to grunge, now as the lead singer of her rock band, The Pretty Reckless. Taylor has model looks and pipes, just as she showed in her John Galliano fragrance campaign, loaning both her face and voice to the commercial. In our candid interview, Taylor talks music against the backdrop of New York City’s own Webster Hall.

Taylor Momsen Thanks ‘Gossip Girl’ & Says, “I Would Be Dead Without Music”

Taylor Momsen couldn’t seem happier about her break from acting. Just four months after her breakup with Gossip Girl, she began a tour around Europe and the U.S. This week, she released her debut album Light Me Up with her band, The Pretty Reckless, in the U.S., after it created buzz and rave reviews in the UK.

“I’ve been writing songs since I was 5,” she told OK! at the Music Unites In Tune music series in New York Wednesday night. “Acting is something I was put into and I enjoy it, but it’s very much a job to me, whereas music is something I couldn’t live without. I couldn’t live without it. I would be dead without music.”

Although it appeared things between Taylor and Gossip Girl ended awkwardly with rumors of her not getting along with the cast or a loss of focus, Taylor says she has no hard feelings about the indefinite hiatus from the show that made the 17-year-old child actress a household name among teen girls as Jenny Humphrey.

“I have to really thank them,” Taylor told OK!. “I can’t be in London and filming the show in New York. I mean, you just can’t. I have to thank them for being very supportive of the band and the record and allowing me to tour and support it. But I mean, I’m a musician. I would consider myself a musician who also acts, not the other way around.”

And as for if she missed the show at all?

“You know, Gossip Girl has been such a great ride and I’ve had such a great time filming the show, but I’m very happy,” Taylor said.

It seemed like an overnight transition for her in 2009, when she shed her good-girl image and transformed into the thick-eyeliner-wearing, leather-clad, torn-stockings rocker she’s become. Now, Taylor’s being compared with another sexy rocker, Joan Jett, which is more than fine by her.

“It’s absolutely cool,” she says of the sex appeal comparison. “Everyone’s going to have their own opinion about it. It’s fine. That’s what’s so great about it. It’s artistic, so everyone’s allowed to like it, hate it, it’s up to you, but give it a chance, you know?”

Music has played an integral part of her life, which is part of the reason she decided to make one of her first performances after her debut record was released for the Music Unites In Tune music series t

    My Favorite Things: Taylor Momsen

This week: Taylor Momsen, the 17-year-old Gossip Girl star-turned-rocker with her band the Pretty Reckless. Their debut album, Light Me Up, is out now.

    FAVORITE ALBUM:
"Abbey Road by the Beatles. It's hard to pick a favorite Beatles record. A lot of people say Rubber Soul or Revolver. But Abbey Road has this finality to it. Plus, it has 'Come Together.'"

    FAVORITE NEW ARTIST:
"Soundgarden. Wait... does that count? I think they count because they're making a new record. It's been 15 years so it might as well be a new band. Chris Cornell has some pretty big shoes to fill: his own. I wouldn't want to write a follow up to Down On The Upside."

    FAVORITE TV SHOW:
"Law and Order SVU. There are so many episodes you can watch it during long drives on the road and never repeat one."

    FAVORITE MOVIE:
"The Wizard of Oz. Classic. It's filmmaking at its finest."

    FAVORITE ESSENTIAL ITEM FOR TOURING:
"There are lots of essentials. First, as much music as possible. There's nothing worse than repeating the same records over and over again on the road. And as much new music as possible. We always grab other bands CDs and play those."

    FAVORITE RESTAURANT:
"Joe's Pizza is my favorite slice in New York City to get after recording all night. They're still open at 4 A.M. -- a musician's dream!"

FAVORITE WAY TO PASS TIME ON THE ROAD:
"Doing interviews! And writing, though writing tends to be painful so I do my best to procrastinate."

    FAVORITE PIECE OF CLOTHING:
"Leather jacket. It's the one thing I never leave without."

    FAVORITE PLACE ON EARTH:
"Jamaica. It was the last vacation I took with my family. It was beautiful and because of the local agriculture we had a really happy time!"

    FAVORITE PLACE TO ESCAPE:
"Amsterdam. New Year's eve is INSANE there with fireworks exploding over the whole city all night."

    FAVORITE MANTRA:
"'Ready, Fire, Aim.' You can spend your whole life planning. But once you're ready, get out there and start doing it."

    FAVORITE PICK-UP LINE:
    "I love your record."

    FAVORITE LIE:
    "I love your record."
