The Pretty Reckless - “Goin’ Down” Lyrics

Hey there, Father
I don’t wanna bother you
But I’ve got a sin to confess
I’m just 16 if you know what I mean
Do you mind if I take off my dress?

Don’t know where to start
Let me get to the good parts
Might wanna cross up your legs
I’ve got envy, I’ve got greed, anything that you need
And I’m not above having to beg

There was this boy who tore my heart in two
I had to lay him eight feet underground

All I need is someone to save me
Cus I am goin’ down
And what I need is someone to save me
Cus I am goin’ down, all the way down

Well, hey there, Father
There is just one other thing
I have a simple request
I hear you know God could you give him a nod in my direction
I would be in your debt

Perhaps there is something that we could work out
I noticed your breathing has started to change
We could go in the back behind all these stacks of bibles
And get out of this cage

There was this boy who tore my heart in two
I had to lay him eight feet underground

All I need is someone to save me
Cus I am goin’ down
And what I need is someone to save me
Cus God, I’m goin’ down, all the way down

I didn’t wanna do it, Father
But I caught him with another woman in the bed I made him
And so I put him in a grave
And now there’s no one left around to get me off
When I want it's a drag

The next day on the television they identified him
By the circumsision that I made him and now I’m on the run
But wait, why did I have to go and kill him
When he was the best I ever had

All I need is someone to save me
Cus I am goin’ down
And what I need is something to save me
Cus God, I’m goin’ down, all the way down

I’m goin’ down
All the way down

Taylor Momsen is amazing. I was shaking when I heard this song the first time, especially the first two verses. I love The Pretty Reckless, I love Gossip Girl, I love Taylor Momsen.

I think the same.
TPR's songs are amazing, great sound and lyrics and I love Taylor's voice!

i absolutely LOVE this song but whats it about?

Claire said...

It's about a girl who kills her boyfriend because she found him in their bed with another woman. So this girl buries him and tries to tell that to her father. Anyway, in the end, she regrets what she did, because she realizes that she really loved him but now she has to run away because the police is looking for her.

I don't know where Taylor took the inspiration for this song, but I think it's original and the it works very good!

Actually, sleeping wizard, technically, this song isn't about her telling her sins to her father, but to a priest.... you know, in a confessional. Haha. Like when Blaire went to the Catholic church to confess about sleeping with Chuck. ;]

Oh, thank you for the clarification. I've misinterpreted that part.

In fact now I understand it better :)

oh ok thank you so much! i understand it now! how about the song make me wanna die? can you clarify that one too?

Claire said...

You're welcome :)

Make me wanna die it's a love song. A girl talks to her lover. She says that she would die for him, would steal and lie for him. She loves him so much that he makes her wanna die.

Some verse make me think that this 2 lovers can be vampires or creature of the night ("But everything was better when sun goes down",
"Opportunities for eternity And I could belong to the night", "And everything you love will burn up in the light", "Taste me, drink my soul
Show me all the things that I shouldn't know
And there's a new moon on the rise") but maybe I'm wrong.

Anyway in the song, you can understand that they live in the night when they can stay together and love each other.

I don't know if my interpretation is good.
Don't esitate to share your opinion if you'd like! Thanks :)

They are absolutely brilliant. Honestly the best music I've heard in awhile and so unique. Went to Warped just for her and it was definitely worth it.

could you analyze the first few lines of the song..like up to the part "might wanna cross up ur legs"

She has killed her boyfriend and she goes to a church to confess her sin.
She talks directly to the father of the church and she tries to explain her situation: she's just 16, she has something to confess..
it's something important, so she suggest him to have a seat and make himself comfort, because it will take time..

hey thanks sleeping wizards for interpreting this song! i have a question though, the parts like "We could go in the back behind all these stacks of bibles, And get out of this cage" and "Do you mind if I take off my dress?" is she trying to seduce the priest while in the church? i can't really tell exactly and you seem to be a better interpreter of this song than i am! haha :)

Hi raspberry and thank you :D (i'm sleeping wizard, but I've changed my nickname)
I'm just trying to understand the meaning of the song, i'm not sure i'm right.
I have to say that i thought the same when i read that part "Do you mind if i take off my dress" in fact it's unsual to say to a priest.. maybe you're right, this girl is the traditional "bad girl" and wants to seduce the priest. maybe because it's just in her nature to do so.

xraspberry_heart said...

hey Claire, no prob! :) hmmm yeah maybe... yeah, it's an interesting thing to say to a priest! lol :) well thank u for ur reply! :)

Claire said...

No problem! It's a pleasure :D feel free to comment and ask anytime ;)

Apperently the lyrics have something to do with with Catholic priests sexually abusing children.

Ines said...

yes, she said recently that the song was about priests abusing children and all the scandals it has brought up lately.

Claire said...

Yes, you're right, she said it's about that.
Here's the link at the interview, at about minute 3:00

i wonder, Would she get criticized for these lyrics if she didn't dress the way she does??

I'm not putting it up for a argument but i'm genially curious ; )

Claire said...

Hi! :D
Yeah, her lyrics are very strong. She's young but she has always original ideas for her songs.
Maybe yes, you're right, because she talks about something that make people think about it like recent scandals on priests abusing children.

Hey, does anyone know if you can get songs such as Factory Girl and ADD as normally recorded songs instead of live versions. It's hard to hear the song on the live versions

Claire said...

For now there aren't demos of them, but Factory Girl will be in the album "Light me up", you can buy it and listen to the song normally recorded there. ADD is an old song, don't know if the recorded version will come ever out ... but hope so :)

Screaming_Hallelujah said...

Thanks :)

No prob! ;)

This song is completely innapropriate and disgusting. Being completely respectful to the band, the lyrics are rude, especially for a teenager to be singer. People look up to her and she is an icon, who is behaving like a child. She strives for attention and fulfillment and looks for it in all the wring places. I believe she needs to take a step back and reevaluate how she is living her life and the choices she is making, cause they do have consequences.

Anonymous said...

It's her life and if that's how she wants to live it, then so be it. Everyone's different and they don't all have to live the way you think is correct.

SO what I think is going on here is that she is trying to confess but her bad girl side kicks in and tries to seduce the father of the church so he can get gos on her side to forgive her. Or something like that, I don't know tho that is totally my opinion. This band is amazing! I listen to the everyday. And to the person who says that this is completely inappropriate, don't you think the world has become inappropriate. Plus this is her type of music and it is nice to see someone not be fake! She doesn't want to sing innocent love songs she likes morbid and "rude songs" but a lot of other people like them too. So hmmm I guess it is ones opinion?

Claire said...

Yes, everyone have it's opinion. I agree with you because I like more this kind of songs rather than those usual love songs. I think Taylor and The Pretty Reckless are very talented because their songs are great and I can't take away from them. I listen to them everyday too and I love them. There are many other people who think that Taylor is too young and tries to much, but I think that if you like her music there's no need to judge her for the way she dress or behave, it's her life and she can do whatever she wants. This is just my opinion :)

sleeping wizard, The lyrics in make me wanna die that reference to the night; it probably means because the best of it all happens at night, or when the sun goes down. "Taste me drink my soul, show me all the things that I shouldn't know," seems more just like part of the sexual acts that they do ;)
And the lyrics "theres a new moon on the rise" seem to refer to a new beginning, and new cycle.
Ofcourse, That's just my interpretation as well

Anonymous said...

Yeah, she was confessing to the priest about having killed her boyfriend. When she talks about taking her dress off, she isn't exactly seducing the priest because she's a "bad girl," but because she's looking for forgiveness, in exchange for sexual favors. Somewhere in the lyrics, she says something like, "Maybe we can work something out," so she's negotiating: He can have sex with her IF he asks God to forgive her, because he seems to "know God."

Claire said...

I think the last one is a really good interpretation! Maybe it's just what Taylor meant to tell in the song :)
